Medical aid in dying in Quebec: a unique laboratory. Emerging data from CIRAMM and an international perspective

The Antoine-Turmel Research Chair on the Legal Protection of the Elderly (Université Laval, Canada) is offering a lecture by Professor Marie-Eve Bouthillier on medical aid in dying.

Québec occupies a singular position in the international landscape of medical aid in dying (MAID), both in terms of its legislative framework and its unique track record in terms of democratic debate on this issue. Ten years after the adoption of the Act respecting end-of-life care and one year after the coming into force of the advance directive on medical assistance in dying (ADAMD) regime, it is now possible to draw up a portrait of the implementation and evolution of these practices.

This presentation will take stock of medical assistance in Quebec by comparing its regime with other jurisdictions where some form of assistance in dying is permitted. It will explain how the DAAMM regime works and share some of the findings surrounding this new practice.

It will also discuss the Consortium interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l'AMM (CIRAMM), which is playing a key role in generating groundbreaking empirical data on practices, experiences and factors to better understand the use of MA. Initial results from the ongoing key-informant study reveal various factors that can influence the use of MA at different levels: personal characteristics, organizational aspects and societal factors. These findings underline the importance of further research to inform public policy and improve the experience of patients, relatives and professionals.
