Dying at the castle

As a place of power, the château obeys a process of spatial, social and symbolic segregation, making it the stage for a multi-faceted dramaturgy. Dying in the castle means first of all, between repentance and penance, presenting oneself naked before God. Then it's a matter of abandoning one's remains to the living, leaving funerals, tributes and other solemnities to their discretion. Rituals whose deployment affirms, from the most modest noble lair to the monarch's palace, the inscription of a lineage in a territory, the strength of the ties between lords, vassals and tenants, and the affirmation, right up to the present day, of an aristocratic sociability of difference even in death.
