Dying in migration, dying in times of crisis: mourning processes and body (de)placements, what obstacles, what points of resilience?

The economic, ecological, political and armed crises of recent years have put significant numbers of people on the path to migration, with reception policies and prospects that can vary greatly from country to country. In 2020, with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new type of crisis - this time a health crisis - will have (re)emerged, impacting on mobility and ways of experiencing migration and exile. This symposium will address the question of death in migration in times of crisis, from a number of angles. The situation of the end of life in migration raises the question of return to the country of origin, be it the return dreamed of during migration, the desire to spend the last years of life in the country of origin... It also raises the question of funeral practices, associated rites and burial sites. The health crisis has affected our relationship with death, and raises a number of questions in migratory situations: how do we think about funerals and death rites in times of reduced mobility? How are mourning processes affected by the impossibility of attending funerals? Dying in migration during a time of crisis raises questions not only about the mourning process, but also about the placement and movement of bodies. In particular, times of crisis entail unexpected constraints in the face of the death of a loved one, which may also be unexpected. The aim will be to question the experience of such situations and to understand how the final destination of the body after death can prove a hindrance or, on the contrary, a point of resilience in the intercultural experience of those left behind.

This symposium will be structured around three panels:

1. The grieving process in migration in times of crisis.
2. Placing and displacing dead bodies in migration during times of crisis.
3. The psychic, social and cultural implications of the place of the lifeless body in migration during times of crisis.
