Gender and death. A cross-disciplinary approach: archaeology, history and social anthropology

Since the 1980s, the question of gender (or "social sex") has become an area of research in its own right, and a great deal of work, particularly conducted in cultural

Gender is an analytical tool that makes it possible to approach past and present societies in a new way, and to question the modalities of social relations between the sexes.
Despite the many factors that may influence the treatment of the deceased, the funerary sphere is particularly well-suited to this type of study: gender can be signified during the various stages of funerary time (e.g. rituals, preparation of the body, burial), in conjunction with other aspects.

These encounters between young researchers will focus on three areas of research, and are designed to address gender in death by bringing together papers from the prehistoric, historical and contemporary periods, with no geographical limits.

These meetings are organized by the University of Strasbourg, the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès, UMR 7044 Archimèdes and the TRACES laboratory
