Living in EHPAD: ordinary times and pandemic times

A Rendez-vous de la recherche sur l'autonomie organized by the CNSA in collaboration with the Plateforme nationale pour la recherche sur la fin de vie, which will discuss some of the results of the COVIDEHPAD study.

This study of issues relating to confinement, end-of-life and death in EHPADs, during the first wave of the Covid-19 epidemic in France was coordinated by the Plateforme nationale pour la recherche sur la fin de vie (visit the page dedicated to the COVIDEHPAD study).

Interviews with 37 residents living in 15 facilities revealed varied experiences of the first confinement according to the modalities of "living in Ehpad". Those who lived withdrawn in their rooms saw little difference from their life before, while those who appropriated communal spaces perceived it more as a deprivation. Finally, those who were outward-looking tended to emphasize the lack of freedom of movement. Three other factors also shed light on experiences of confinement: the confinement methods implemented by the Ehpad, the occupational or relational resources that Ehpads were able to mobilize, and the residents' previous trajectory.
