Palliative Care Research Incubator

The NIHR Palliative Care Research Incubator, in partnership with the Sawubona Group, is hosting a half-day virtual event focused on community researchers in the field of palliative and end-of-life care research.

Community researchers—individuals recruited from and trusted by their own communities—are one of the most effective ways to ensure that research reaches populations that have historically been excluded. The morning will be devoted to explaining why community researcher models are important for equity in palliative and end-of-life care, sharing practical advice on recruitment, training, compensation, and support for community researchers, and giving community researchers themselves a platform to speak directly about their experiences and priorities. Participants will leave with approaches they can apply to their own studies, as well as opportunities for future collaboration, mentoring, and networking.

This event is intended for anyone involved in palliative and end-of-life care research who wishes to work more equitably with underserved communities. This includes researchers at all career stages, from doctoral students and research assistants to established researchers; those responsible for patient, patient, and stakeholder involvement (PPIE) and community engagement; staff involved in research implementation and clinical research; as well as community researchers themselves, alongside their colleagues from community organizations and the nonprofit sector. No prior experience collaborating with community researchers is required: this session will be just as useful for those planning to conduct their first study as it is for those looking to strengthen an existing approach.
