Putting the dead into stories: actors, techniques and methods

This study day aims to explore a particular memorial practice: that of the posthumous reconstruction of biographies of the deceased, their narration and dissemination.

This questioning emerges from research carried out as part of the Pri-MI program ("Making the Uncertain Dead His Own"), which is interested in the care of the dead produced by mass violence by individuals or groups outside of an official mandate.

From the presentation of specific case studies, based on original ethnographic or historical investigations, this day intends to be part of ongoing reflections on the relationship between the living and the dead by shedding light on a singular memorial and relational modality, marked by the production of a biography.

The thematic axes of this study day are:

  • The artisans of biographical narratives
  • The techniques, modalities and media of these biographical reconstructions
  • Effects of erasure and illumination.

It is organized by Clara BOUTET, Clara DUTERME and Jeanne TEBOUL, anthropologists at LinCS UMR 7069, University of Strasbourg.
