The reform of the end-of-life framework - 2

For many years now, the right to die with dignity has been at the heart of a societal debate that is now being played out in Parliament, where two laws are being discussed, one on palliative care and the other on the introduction of assisted dying. Adopted on first reading by the National Assembly on May 27, 2025, these texts raise hopes for better support at the end of life and in situations of refractory suffering and/or particularly severe disability; but also concerns about the risks of abuse and the trade-offs that could be made between palliative care, the quality of which depends on significant investment, and aid in dying.

With a view to the important discussions that will take place throughout the parliamentary process, the aim of this seminar series is to help shed light on these discussions with regard to existing and proposed legal arrangements, field experiences by healthcare professionals, and research in the human sciences.
