Talking about the end of life with disabled and dependent elderly people: A PRISMA exploratory review

A "rendez-vous de la recherche sur l'autonomie" organized by the CNSA in collaboration with the Plateforme nationale pour la recherche sur la fin de vie.

This talk presents the results of a literature review on the conditions under which dependent and disabled elderly people discuss the end of life with family carers or professionals, and this in a non-hospital setting. The review also seeks to identify gaps in the existing literature. It uses the PRISMA methodology and includes publications in English and French, from the year 2000 to March 2023, in the fields of social sciences. A total of 28 articles were included. The results of these contributions tend to indicate that discussions on end-of-life issues are infrequent due to various problems encountered in the process, the main one emanating from communication difficulties linked to the disabilities of this population. Despite the diversity of disabled and elderly populations, the majority of publications focus on specific subgroups, namely frail elderly people with or without mild dementia and people with mild intellectual disabilities, thus leaving a significant part of the target population unexplored.
