Transmissions in anthropology

The Groupe des anthropologues de langue française (GALF) is organizing its 34th colloquium. Among the main themes addressed is the grave as a memorial vehicle.

This colloquium will focus on four main themes coordinated by fellow PACEA members plus a varia session dedicated to posters:

  1. Interaction of biological and cultural processes in the transmission of genetic traits
  2. Training in Anthropology in the 21st century
  3. Life stories
  4. The grave, a memorial vector
  5. Varia - poster session

The grave, a memorial vector

How long is the memory of a deceased person maintained? By what means is his memory, or even that of a funerary space as a whole, preserved, sometimes glorified, or at the opposite extreme deliberately erased? These questions, which are essential to our reflections on the way societies functioned in the past, can be addressed using an archaeothanatological approach, through the cross-referencing of various sources: observations from the field of archaeology (funerary structures, surface markers, furniture accompanying the deceased, clues to the conversion of places, etc.); biological data concerning the identity of the deceased; possible information recorded in textual sources (mention of burial places, changes in status over time, etc.). This theme may concern different chronological periods (from prehistory to the contemporary era) and various contexts (e.g. rural vs. urban environment).
