What kind of care? What are the limits?
Fifth Psychological Life in Hospitals symposium.
The aim of this colloquium, like its predecessors, is to bring together psychologists working in somatic care departments in general hospitals, to enable them to share their clinical and research practices. But it also involves questioning their working links with colleagues from other disciplines. For the hospital is a place where interdisciplinarity is essential in order to give the best possible care to patients.
But what care? Or more precisely, what kind of psychological care? While there is no doubt that somatic suffering and psychic suffering are closely linked in the course of an illness, what conception do we have of what cares on the psychic level? Is it being able to talk about illness and treatment? Is it being able to talk about oneself and one's life? Is it rather, beyond talking, solicitude, benevolence and care for the patient, which are even more fundamentally the foundation on which psychological care is built? And if so, what links are forged between patient and carer, especially when the latter is a psychologist? Psychological support, transference, therapeutic alliance? How do these notions apply in a place where the framework, demand and desire are characterized by vacillation, uncertainty and diffraction?
And finally, what are the limits? And finally, what are the limits? Limits of care, of treatments, of caregivers, of the team, of institutional functioning, of commitment, of identifications, of hope, of ideals, of life itself: how can we live and work with these limits? Or should we rather talk about diffluence, porosity, the absence of limits?
During lectures, roundtables and workshops we'll attempt to clarify these questions, to put them up for debate, to bring them to life at the heart of what gives them their legitimacy: practice with patients and with other caregivers. We'll see how these questions are actualized within clinical settings, but also within research settings co-constructed by psychologists and their hospital partners.
