Will we have done the right thing? Psychiatrists ask questions about medical aid in dying

Legislators are considering entrusting doctors and caregivers with the task of deciding on active assistance in dying for certain patients. This project is still
under development, and it is not yet clear exactly what provisions will result from it, but such a gesture will certainly be
extremely precisely framed.
How does this project specifically question psychiatrists and psychiatric caregivers?
- Requests for aid in dying relating to a psychic disorder will probably be excluded from the scheme. However, who will be asked to distinguish an admissible request for active assistance in dying from a request for active assistance in dying symptomatic of a psychopathological disorder?
- The desire to die and suicide are at the heart of the practice of psychiatric professionals. Would it be acceptable to deprive a psychiatric patient of his or her rights if, in a situation envisaged by the future law, he or she were to request active assistance
in dying when faced with a lethal and painful short-term somatic condition?
These initial questions, which are not exhaustive, invite psychiatrists to reflect more broadly on this subject. Psychiatric care is part and parcel of a time frame and a positioning of professionals that are primarily concerned with clarifying the patient's request. In this respect, the experience of psychiatric professionals can make a useful contribution to the discussion. The aim of this day is to manage to make progress on these questions, all intertwined, while providing ourselves with the means for the historical and anthropological openings that appear necessary here.
