Understanding the impact of the conditions of death related to the COVID-19 health crisis on the mourning process in bereaved families (adolescents and adults): a qualitative study
The COVID-19 pandemic confronts us with an unprecedented health crisis, with major effects on mental health. A large number of patients have died in hospital (in intensive care, resuscitation or medical units), suddenly, sometimes in complete isolation and without family members being able to accompany them to the end. Since the onset of the crisis, this support for the last moments of life has continually evolved, with a certain heterogeneity across the national territory, which has been diversely affected by the pandemic. The COVIDAAD study aims to understand the impact of the conditions of death linked to the COVID-19 health crisis on the mourning process in bereaved families. This mixed-method, multi-center study is aimed at adults and adolescents aged 15 who lost a loved one during the three waves of the epidemic period. Bereaved people who decide to take part in the study can contact the principal investigator, who will provide contact details in the information note and consent form. Mental health scales will be offered to participants and adapted according to age. The quantitative scales will be administered by a research psychologist. A semi-structured interview will then be initiated, following the criteria of the qualitative methodology. The study is scheduled to begin in 2022.
What is expected is to pinpoint the most traumatogenic aspects for bereaved families and identify risk factors likely to complicate the grieving process.
