Exploring the impact of COVID-19 on hospices and their staff
Catherine Walshe is Professor of Palliative Care at the International End-of-Life Care Observatory at Lancaster University and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Palliative Medicine. Her work focuses on the organization of palliative care services, particularly in primary and community care settings
She will present key findings from the CovPall study, which looked at the experiences of hospices in their response to the pandemic and the impact of this context on their staff. The data to be presented show how hospices, as structures located outside the national care system, faced particular challenges, and how managing and adapting to constraints led to situations of moral distress. Organizational, structural and political changes are urgently needed to mitigate and manage these impacts.
