Lifeless children

Perinatal death has been a central issue for many years, with strong social, human, normative and ethical stakes. Since the 1990s, hospital practices and civil registration procedures for stillborn babies have evolved, giving rise to new social and legal norms. These changes have enabled those who consider themselves to be parents to include the lifeless child in their family's emotional history. The aim of this symposium is to continue the reflection initiated on this theme as part of the PÉRISENS research project ("Perinatality, status, registration, statistics"). It will focus on the ways in which stillborn babies are registered, in particular with the Civil Registry, but also on the way in which names are given (naming the players involved, but also what name and surname should be given to the stillborn baby?) Developing a multidisciplinary approach, this symposium will also benefit from a historical and comparative perspective by integrating the experiences of other countries such as Switzerland and Belgium.

This symposium is organized by the Max Weber Centre and IFROSS in partnership with the Institut des études et de la recherche sur le Droit et la Justice and the Fondation des services funéraires - ville de Paris (SFVP).
