The objectives of this study day were to share Quebec's experience in legalizing medical aid in dying (MAID), to describe and understand practices related to euthanasia, assisted suicide and MAID, to present new advances in research, to identify the challenges of integrating knowledge into care settings and explore opportunities to overcome them, and finally to determine future research directions on the topic of palliative and end-of-life care in relation to these issues.

Isabelle MARCOUX (University of Ottawa) spoke about research carried out in Quebec since 2002 on medical aid in dying in the context of end-of-life care.

Frédéric GUIRIMAND and Danièle LEBOUL (Maison médicale Jeanne Garnier) presented a study on requests for assistance in dying.

Gina BRAVO (Université de Sherbrooke, CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS Research Centre on Aging, RQSPAL) spoke about Canadian perspectives and concerns regarding the extension of medical aid in dying to people living with major neurocognitive disorder.

Anthony STAVRIANAKIS (Laboratoire d'ethnologie et de sociologie comparative, CNRS, Université Paris Nanterre) addressed the issue of assisted suicide in Switzerland and the convolutions of grief.
