The research community has been hard at work proposing projects in response to the call for applications for the Interdisciplinary Research Program on the End of Life.

Launched on March 10, 2025 by the Agence de programmes de recherche en santé, with contributions from the Plateforme nationale pour la recherche sur la fin de vie, this call for applications aims to form consortia to structure and develop research projects of international scope.

When it closed on June 10, 78 letters of intent had been received. They came from both individual researchers and established teams, in mainland France and the overseas territories (Polynesia, French Guiana and Réunion).

All institutions involved in research are represented: universities, university hospital centers, national research organizations (Inserm, CNRS, INED), cancer centers, and other research or healthcare players.

The disciplines fall equally into the fields of health (38 applications) and the humanities and social sciences (37, a third of which are in psychology)1 . This balanced representation will facilitate the formation of interdisciplinary consortia.

Each of the two thematic axes proposed by PRI is well represented in the letters of intent. Forty-two of them focus on "Suffering, lived experience at the end of life (of patients, relatives, healthcare professionals), death requests" while 34 focus on "Anticipating end-of-life issues through healthcare pathways, palliative care needs and different moments of vulnerability", and 2 concern both themes at the same time.

An international scientific committee (Scientific Advidory Board - SAB) will now review and evaluate all the research proposals that have been sent in. From the eligible applications, it will form interdisciplinary and participatory consortia2 before the end of September. These consortia will then meet to design and propose scientific programs, which the SAB will evaluate again in December 2025.

  1. And 3 others (biology, computer science, social work).
  2. Participatory research involves citizens alongside researchers.
