Palliative Care Research Year: applications for 2026 are now open
As part of the initiatives led by the Department of Health to develop palliative care and end-of-life support, funding is available for postgraduate students to undertake a one-year research project in palliative care. The deadline for applications is 3 July 2026.
During their initial training, postgraduate students in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, as well as those in paramedical studies and the humanities and social sciences, who wish to undertake research in preparation for a master’s degree, a doctoral thesis or a university diploma may apply for a paid research year.
The ‘Palliative Care’ research year is carried out in a French research laboratory and must be completed no later than one year after the candidate’s degree has been awarded. It takes place during the academic year following its award, between 1 November and 31 October of the following year (candidates must, in parallel, have applied for leave of absence from their affiliated healthcare institution).
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Propose a research theme and topic that contributes to the implementation of public health initiatives aimed at developing palliative care and end-of-life support.
- Be undertaking research as part of a University Diploma (DU), Master’s degree, PhD or post-doctoral programme, carried out in France or abroad, and conduct this work in a French research laboratory recognised under the five-year university-ministry contract and involved in teaching one of the aforementioned qualifications, or in an approved foreign laboratory involved in an equivalent training programme.
- Where appropriate, provide details of applications to academic, national or international calls for projects, where funding from the ‘palliative care’ research years scheme would supplement insufficient financial support to carry out this research.
