Primary palliative care and the patient pathway: modelling the coordinated pathway in a Maison de Santé Pluriprofessionnelle for palliative patients at home

Research context

End-of-life and palliative care are major issues in our society. Most people (80%) express themselves in favor of being able to stay at home and die at home, close to their loved ones.

Main scientific rationale

Today, one of the strong challenges of the principle of universality of palliative care is to think of primary palliative care, i.e. at home, in an anticipated way and carried by primary care teams. It is necessary to study how this is organized in the field.

Hypothesis(es)

Maison de Santé Pluriprofessionnelles (MSP) type organizations are little studied, but are likely to facilitate the integration of a palliative approach into the patient's care pathway.

Objectives

Describe how the ecosystem around the patient is organized at different stages of the home palliative patient pathway according to healthcare professionals practicing in MSPs, leading to a model.

Methods

We will conduct focus groups within these MSPs. The data collected will be analyzed using grounded theorizing, combined with behavioral analysis to study non-verbal language.

Expected results

This exploratory qualitative study in the form of a focus group is likely to provide insights into the reality of the ecosystem evolving around the patient.

Originality of the project

The coordinated pluriprofessional team in MSPs is an innovative subject of study.

Expected benefits

A better understanding of the roles and limits of each of the players will highlight avenues of work to facilitate this pathway in concrete terms. The aim will be to optimize the specific coordination of this care pathway.
