Sacrality / Spatiality

This project involves setting up a transdisciplinary thematic research network "Sacrality / Spatiality" focusing on the expression of the sacred in spaces dedicated to death and remembrance in our society. The network's activities include the organization of a dedicated colloquium every two years.

The project's goal is to create a transdisciplinary research network on the expression of the sacred in spaces dedicated to death and remembrance in our society

The sacred, understood here as detached from religion, although very present in contemporary creations, is little explained as a spatiality thought through by and for the rite. The architects' approach on this point has not been openly read. The word "sacred" seems almost taboo in this discipline.

The first symposium entitled Spatiality-Sacrality: places of death and remembrance was held in mail 2022. Through a look at contemporary architecture and landscapes, this colloquium aimed to reveal and understand how contemporary architecture questions sacrality. Four lines of study, apprehended at the crossroads of several disciplinary fields, are proposed to reflect the richness of the subject, both in the design process and in spatial practice.
