My work as a researcher in social and political philosophy consists in understanding how collective actions are embedded in a dense institutional fabric, and how the former do not happen without the latter, the whole implementing the conditions of possibility for a dignified life, i.e. the constructed capacity for each person to approach the different aspects of his or her ordinary existence (living, communicating, working, loving) with dignity in a non-dominated way. The question is not whether we should do without institutions, but rather how to ensure that they live up to their promises and embrace the varied situations of hardship (disability, poverty, illness) that they have to face.
