Influences of sleep on quality of life in palliative care
Sleep disorders, whose prevalence reaches 9 to 69% in palliative situations, paradoxically remain under-identified and under-managed, despite being a central regulator of quality of life, mood and resilience in the patient. My research articulates basic neuroscience and clinical palliative medicine and is organized into four complementary axes.
Identifying and characterizing - Phenotypic epidemiology of sleep disorders in specialized facilities, based on a prospective study in advanced thoracic oncology and towards a multicenter protocol.
Understanding - Exploration of neurobiological and neurophysiological mechanisms at the interface of sleep, pain and mood, rooted in fundamental work on melanopsinergic phototransduction (Sleep 2015; PNAS 2021).
Intervene and evaluate - Six multimodal, complementary and progressive therapeutic lines of action: passive virtual reality (randomized controlled trial, CPP validated), co-designed interactive virtual reality (Franco-Hungarian program), intelligent conversational accompaniment of nocturnal discomfort (Fondation des Gueules Cassées / FHU DATA-SURGE), ambient light therapy enriched with turquoise blue (translational outcome of preclinical program), aromatherapy by dry inhalation, and pharmacological rationalization of nocturnal prescriptions.
Transmitting and transforming - Training professionals, participatory research with patients and their loved ones, and interdisciplinary doctoral supervision at the intersection of ethics, social sciences and neuroscience.
